    Job Description:


    A Welding Inspector ensures welding work is safe and ready to function as part of the structure or device it is a part of.

    Job holders also perform a vital role in ensuring safety-at-work regulations are followed and those welders and their workplaces are in no danger.

    Individuals applying for such a role are expected to be fully conversant with welding processes such as MIG, TIG, ARC, laser and butt with metals, including steel and aluminum for use on tubes, non-tubular bars, plates and tanks.

    Successful applicants need to be able to work with project quality engineers and follow blueprints and specifications.
    Need to have an extensive background in metal fabrication.

    Most employers and contracting firms now require incumbents to have passed an on-the-job NVQ evaluation course, hold a current CSWIP certificate and be in possession of a valid driving license.


    Duties & Responsibilities:
     Elaborating and coordinating the welding specifications, and codes/standards
     Coordination with the field subcontractors for all welding procedure specifications and procedures qualifications reports
     Review course and effects of welding defects and take remedial actions
     Coordination with the field subcontractors and the Third Party NDT Inspection Company
     Review of the radiographic film and all NDT reports on a daily basis
     Auditing of the approved Third Party NDT Inspection Company
     Reviewing the inspection and testing methods and procedures for Radiographic, Dye Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, and Ultrasonic inspections
     Witnessing of welder qualifications testing and procedures qualification testing
     Witnessing any remedial repair welding
     Reviewing of the welding summery reports
     Checking the hydrostatic test packages for NDT compliance prior to testing
     Advising the site subcontractors with regards to welding and testing
     Monitor any Post Weld Heat Treatment on site and review the completed test reporting
     Selection of welds for non destructive testing
     Recording and listing of defective welds
     Monitor the control and issue of welding electrodes
     Control the QC site welding inspectors
     Actively monitor site radiation safety
     Review day to day applications for x-raying of welds
     Coordinate the issue of nonconformance reports through the site QC Manager
     Complete site quality instructions to sub-contractors when required.
     Complies with the highest level of safety during all stages of project execution to avoid any type of incidents and or accidents. Take reasonable care of own health and safety and that of others in the workplace.
     Complies with all statutory requirements connected with the implementation of project.
     Assist in the proper closeout of project including transmittal of final documentation to client.

    TheWelding Inspector is responsible for the following:
    "Before Welding"


    Safety:

    • Ensure that all operations are carried out in complete compliance with local, company, or national safety legislation (i.e. permits to work are in place)

    Documentation:

    • Check specification (Year and revisions)
    • Check drawing (correct revision)
    • Check welding procedure specification and welder approval
    • Validate certificate of calibration (welding equipment & inspection instrument)
    • Check material and consumable certification

    Welding process and ancillaries:

    • Check welding equipment and all related ancillaries (cable, regulator, oven, quiver etc).

    Incoming Consumables:

    • Check pipe/plate and welding consumable for size, condition, specification & storage.

    Marking out preparation & set up:

    Check the:
     Correct method of cutting weld preparation (pre-heat for thermal cutting if applicable).
     Correct preparation (Relevant bevel angles, root face, root gap, root radius, land etc.)
     Check pre-welding distortion control (Tackling, bridging, jigs, line up clamp, etc)
     Correct level & method of pre heat applied prior to tack welding.
     All tack welding to be monitored and inspected.

    "During Welding"


    Monitor:
     Whether conditions (Mainly for site work, welding is generally halted when inclement)
     Pre-heat values (Heating method, location and control method)
     In-process distortion control (Sequence or balanced welding)
     Consumable control (Specification, size, condition, and any special treatments)
     Welding process and all related variable parameter (Voltage, ampere, travel speed, etc)
     Welding and/or purging gasses (Type, pressure/flow and control method)
     Welding conditions for root run / hot pass and all subsequent run, and inter-run cleaning.
     Minimum and/or maximum inter-pass temperatures (Temperature and control method)
     Check Compliance with all other variables stated on the approved welding procedure

    "After Welding"

     Carry out visual inspection of the welded joint (Including dimensional aspect)
     Check and monitor NDT requirement (Method, qualification of operator, execution)
     Identify repairs from assessment of visual or NDT reports.
     Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) (Heating method and temperature recording system)
     Re-inspect with NDT/NDE after PWHT (if applicable)
     Hydrostatic test procedure

    "Repairs"

     Excavation procedure (Approval and execution)
     Approval of the NDT procedures (For assessment of complete defect removal)
     Repair procedure (approval of re-welding procedures and welder approval)
     Execution of approved re-welding procedure (Compliance with repair procedure)
     Re-inspect the repair area with visual inspection and approved NDT method
     Compete site quality instructions to sub-contractors when required


    Requirements (Academic Education):

    • Welding Inspectors can possess several types of qualifications ranging from the Diploma, Associate and Degree level. Many institutions offer technical and vocational courses that will qualify persons for this type of job.

    These may include:
     Mechanical Engineering
     Welding Inspection
     General Engineering
     Metal work
    There are also certifications in these areas like AWS, CSWIP, HND, HNC or NVQ.


    Work Experience:

    • Extensive familiarity with welding works with at least 5 years of experience as Welding Inspector. Must have 5 to 7 years experience in the Oil and Gas industry.
    • Middle East experience is considered essential.

    Certifications:

    • Diploma in Engineering , Associate and Degree level supported with welding certifications/qualifications
